California Cancer Reporting System Standards Volume I: Abstracting and Coding Procedures
This field identifies the presence or absence of distant metastasis (M) of the tumor known following the completion of surgical therapy.
Refer to the most current AJCC Cancer Staging Manual for coding instructions.
Code the pathologic M as documented by the managing provider or first treating provider in the medical record.
If the managing provider has not recorded the pathologic M, registrars will code the pathologic M based on the best information available.
Use code 88 for pathologic T, N, and M as well as pathologic stage group when:
Site/histology combination is not defined in the AJCC Manual.
For in situ tumors that are not staged according to the AJCC Manual.
