California Cancer Reporting System Standards Volume I: Abstracting and Coding Procedures
This field identifies the presence or absence of regional lymph node (N) involvement and describes the extent of regional node involvement known prior to the start of any therapy.
Refer to the most current AJCC Cancer Staging Manual for coding instructions.
Code the clinical N as documented by the managing provider or first treating provider in the medical record.
If the managing provider has not recorded the clinical N, registrars will code the clinical N based on the best information available.
Use code 88 for clinical T, N, and M as well as stage group when:
Site/histology combination is not defined in the AJCC Manual.
For in situ tumors that are not staged according to the AJCC Manual.
